Things to Do at Dunn's River Falls and Around Ocho Rios

The climb is 75 minutes. Here is everything else the day can hold, and how long each part of it takes.

In the park

Climbing the terraces — about 75 minutes

The main event, and the reason almost everyone is here. Guides link climbers into a chain and lead from the front, stopping in the wide pools where the tiers flatten out. Bring water shoes; the park shop sells them at the gate if you arrive without.

You can also step onto the dry stairway at any point, which makes the climb far less committing than it looks from the beach.

The beach, the sea and the shallow end — as long as you like

The terraced cascade of Dunn's River Falls running down through rainforest

The falls land on lifeguarded white sand, and the swimming there is calm and shallow close in. Most people climb first and swim afterwards, which is the right order: the sea washes the river off you.

Snorkelling off the beach works on a flat day. For a proper reef, the catamaran trips out of Ocho Rios stop at a live one on the way.

The splash pad and the shaded picnic ground — for small children

The splash pad: a shallow play area for children too young for the terraces, inside the grounds and away from the current.

The picnic ground: shaded tables set back from the sand, useful when half the family is climbing and half is not.

The craft market: stalls inside the park, and the easiest place to fill twenty minutes while the climbers come down.

Beyond the gate

Pairing the falls with the Blue Hole and Secret Falls — a half or full day

The Blue Hole is a spring-fed swimming hole about twenty minutes inland from Ocho Rios, with cliff jumps and a rope swing. Secret Falls is a smaller cascade a short jungle walk from it. Neither is part of Dunn's River Falls, and both carry their own entry fee — which is why almost everyone visits them on a combined booking.

Book the pairing, not the pieces

A combined booking covers both gates and the drive between them, which is almost always cheaper than arranging each separately.

Catamaran cruises, snorkelling and the open bar — 4 to 6 hours

Two catamarans sail to the falls from Ocho Rios, stopping at a reef on the way and turning the return leg into a rum-punch party. Lunch, drinks and snorkel gear come with the fare.

The trade-off is time on the terraces: the cruises give the least of any option, between an hour and a quarter and two hours. Book one because you want the boat day, and treat the climb as the highlight rather than the whole point.

River tubing on the White River, and zip-lining nearby — a half day

River tubing: a slow float down the White River, paired with the falls on a Runaway Bay departure that includes lunch. It is the gentlest way to add a second activity without a second scramble.

Zip-lining: operates in the area and appears on some listings as a paid extra. It is not part of the park admission, so ask before you book if it matters.

For hours and entry costs see Plan Your Visit, and the park page covers the facilities inside the gate. Every departure sits side by side on Dunn's River Falls Tours, including every Dunn's River Falls tour from Ocho Rios.
