The trip

The falls on their own, from Ocho Rios

No second attraction, no long drive, no eight-hour day. You are collected in Ocho Rios, driven the short distance west to the park, and given two hours there before the run back.

It is the trip to book when the climb is the thing you actually came for and the rest of the day belongs to the beach, the town or the ship.

Two hours on site — the longest stay available

Two hours sounds modest until you compare it with what a combination day gives you. The catamaran cruises allow an hour and a quarter at the falls; most Blue Hole combinations allow ninety minutes. This one allows two.

That is enough to climb at a comfortable pace, go back up a second time if you want to, swim at the beach where the river meets the sea, and still browse the craft market before the vehicle leaves.

What the fare covers

In the fare

  • Air-conditioned vehicle
  • Complimentary soda or water on arrival

Not in the fare

  • Lunch and all other meals

The climb, and the stairs beside it

A falls guide links the group into a chain and leads from the front, choosing the footholds and stopping in the wide pools between tiers. The main path is scrubbed of algae, which is why it grips better than it looks from the bottom.

A dry stairway runs the full height alongside. You can step onto it at any point, and anyone not climbing can follow the group all the way up and meet them at the top.

Who this suits — and who should book a combination

This suits you if you are staying in Ocho Rios or arriving by ship, you want the maximum time on the terraces for the minimum fare, and you have other plans for the afternoon.

Choose something else if you want the Blue Hole as well. The Ocho Rios Blue Hole and Dunn's River Falls tour adds it for From $89 and still finishes inside five hours. Solo travellers should note that this one needs two adults to book, and the catamaran cruises take single bookings.

Meeting your driver in Ocho Rios

Collection is from Ocho Rios hotels, from the town centre and from the cruise pier, and the operator confirms your point directly. If you are arriving by ship, look for the staff member in the yellow shirt at the exit.

Confirm the pickup time the day before. The slot chosen at checkout is usually the arrival time at the park, not your collection time.

Know before you go

Two adults minimum. Solo travellers are better served by the catamaran cruises.

No meals are included. Eat before or after; a complimentary soda or water is provided on arrival.

Towels, swimwear and water shoes are excluded. The park shop sells shoes at the gate, which is the easiest fix.

Not wheelchair accessible. The stairway beside the falls lets a non-climber follow the group the whole way up.

Photo and video packages are sold on site. They cost around US$40, they are optional, and a waterproof case for your own phone costs far less.

Maximum twenty-five travellers. Book a few days ahead in cruise season, when the morning slots go first.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add the Blue Hole to this trip?
Not to this one, but the Ocho Rios Blue Hole and Dunn's River Falls tour covers both in four to five hours. It costs more and gives ninety minutes at the falls rather than two hours.
Is two hours long enough at the falls?
Comfortably. The climb takes about seventy-five minutes at a steady pace, which leaves time for the beach at the bottom. Most people finish with time to spare.
Do I need to be fit?
A moderate level of fitness is what the climb asks for. It is a scramble over wet rock rather than a hike, the guide sets the pace, and there is a dry stairway beside it if you want out.
What is not included in the price?
Meals, towels, swimwear, water shoes and gratuities. Admission to the park is included, and a soda or water is handed to you on arrival.
