The trip

Two waterfalls in one afternoon, from Ocho Rios

This is the shortest way to see both of the waterfalls people come to St Ann for. You are collected in Ocho Rios, driven twenty minutes inland to the Blue Hole, then back to the coast for Dunn's River Falls, and returned in four to five hours.

The two are nothing alike. The Blue Hole is deep, cold and vertical — you jump into it. Dunn's River is wide, shallow and horizontal — you climb up it. Doing both in an afternoon is the reason this combination outsells either on its own.

The Blue Hole: jumping, swinging and the ladder down

The Blue Hole is a chain of spring-fed pools in the hills above Ocho Rios, ringed by limestone and jungle. A local guide walks you up the sequence, pointing out which ledges are safe to jump from and how deep the water below each one is.

Nothing is compulsory. There is a rope swing over the main pool and a ladder for getting out of it, and plenty of people spend the hour swimming rather than jumping.

Ninety minutes on the Dunn's River climb

Back on the coast, a falls guide links your group into a chain and leads from the front. The climb is a scramble over wet, terraced rock, with wide pools between the tiers where everyone stops, catches their breath and takes photographs.

Ninety minutes covers the ascent comfortably plus time on the beach at the bottom, where the river runs straight into the Caribbean.

Who this suits — and who should book the falls on their own

This suits you if you are staying in Ocho Rios or arriving by ship, you want both waterfalls without giving up the whole day, and you would rather not settle two separate entry fees at two separate gates.

Choose something else if the Blue Hole does not appeal, or you are counting every dollar. The falls-only trip from Ocho Rios costs From $51, gives you two hours at Dunn's River rather than ninety minutes, and has you back even sooner. Travelling alone? This one needs two adults to book.

Getting picked up in Ocho Rios

Pickup is from Ocho Rios hotels and from the cruise pier, and the operator confirms the exact time with you directly. The time you select at checkout is your arrival slot, not your collection time — hotel pickups start 30 to 60 minutes before it.

Confirm your pickup with the operator the day before. It takes one message and removes the single most common cause of a missed excursion.

Know before you go

Two adults minimum. Solo travellers should look at the catamaran cruises, which take single bookings.

Not wheelchair accessible. The beach, the splash pad and the dry stairway beside the falls are all reachable without climbing.

Lunch is not included. Carry cash; there are food stalls at the park and the driver will stop.

Towels and water shoes are yours to bring. The park shop at the gate sells shoes if you arrive without.

Maximum twenty-five travellers. In cruise season the earlier departures fill first, so book a few days ahead.

Weather or low numbers can move the date. The operator offers an alternative or a full refund, and your own 24-hour cancellation right stands either way.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do just Dunn's River Falls, without the Blue Hole?
Yes. The falls-only trip from Ocho Rios drops the Blue Hole, costs less and gives you two hours at the waterfall instead of ninety minutes. It is the better choice if the climb is the only thing you came for.
Is this suitable if I cannot swim?
The Dunn's River climb is waist-deep at most and guided in a linked chain, so non-swimmers manage it every day. The Blue Hole is deep, and the jumps and rope swing are optional. Say so on the day and the guide will keep you to the shallow pools.
What should I bring?
A swimsuit, a towel, water shoes and cash for tips and lunch. Leave your phone in a locker or buy a waterproof case at the gate. Everything else is provided.
How much free time is there at each stop?
About an hour at the Blue Hole and ninety minutes at Dunn's River Falls, plus the drive between them. The four-to-five hour total is door to door from Ocho Rios.
